Shoot Fashion with Keith Moss and Teesside University

Fashion photography may be one of the most glamorous industries to work in – but it’s highly competitive.
So how does an aspiring photographer break in to the industry? And what’s your role when you get there? Who will you work with? How will you interact with the models, stylists and make-up artists?

Keith, who has worked at the top of his game for over 20 years, dispels industry myths with candid, behind-the-scenes discussions with professional make-up artists, stylists and models – all important contributors to great fashion photography.

Fearnley’s Angels…..

Early start for Team Moss as Poppy Moss has been a poorly pooch and had to be taken to see the Vet…. They couldn’t resist the bacon & sausage buttie shop next door, it would have been rude not to what a start to the day!

Back to the studio for a fun packed day with Team Fearnley to shoot Kate’s new Spring Summer Collection & to shoot customers past and present in their favourite outfits…..

9am Sophie from Team Fearnley arrives eager as ever; Sophie kicks off the day with a pep talk to Kate’s customers about what she wants from the shoot. Music whacked up Sophie begins….

“Ladies, think Charlie’s Angels.. inspirational independent women!” (Sophie even poses as  Charlie’s Angels did with pointed finger guns.. brilliant….) this defiantly got the ladies more relaxed even if it was just seeing Sophie move.

With Keith behind the camera the ladies were raring to go with sexy sultry looks. Keith got some cracking images of the lovely ladies in Kate’s clothes, they were all ages, shapes and sizes. Kate has something for everyone, even promising Keith his own pair of sparkly hot pants just like Kyle’s (Christmas is coming Keith you never know what Pat might buy you!)

The ladies polished off the morning by posing with Keith, move over Rankin, Mossy coming through. We think the ladies would agree a fab time had by all. With the ladies gone time to get cracking on the next part of the shoot. Kate Fearnley is on hand with our professional model Louise Pridding. Natalie our Make Up artist has been beavering away getting Louise ready for the shoot of Kate’s Spring  Summer 2012 Collection. Louise has worked with Team Moss & Team Fearnley on numerous occasions. Time to shoot some dresses great colours & styles we love them all.

3pm Pat comes to the rescue as poor Louise is starving, she has been up since the crack of dawn, so time to sample Pats home made Leek & Potato soup, Mmmmm lovely jubley just what we all needed, a boost after a busy morning/afternoon. Just a few more dresses and then we called it a day, Kate’s really pleased with the outcome, the images are looking great well done to all, defiantly ending the day with a well deserved cheeky wine for team Moss…..

Keith and the team were asked to renew the brochure for Hand Picked Hotels Crathorne Hall which is set in  peaceful surroundings just off the A19, in the village of Crathorn,  North Yorkshire.  Team Moss arrived early one crisp autumn morning to be met by Rachel and the staff of Crathorne Hall and after a delicious coffee  it was time to get started as we had a lot to do in one day.

First image of the day bagged which was the Edwardian room where civil ceremony’s take place, it’s a deceptively large room that looks cosy in the warm autumn sunlight .   We move on the main room, the drawing room  where the Wedding breakfast is served, we take several images here as there is a lot of detail to take as well as the whole room. half wat through we break for lunch which Crathorn Hall provide, the food is delicious and sets team Moss up for the rest of the day.

We move on the the Bedroom the honeymoon suite which is called  the crathorne suite which is stunning and massive  containing a beautiful  bed  of course a large lounge area a dining room area a walk in wardrobe area and of course a on suite bathroom with roll top bath.

After a full day of Commercial photography and a bit of a late finish we do Hand Picked Hotels Crathorne Hall justice with our photography, Client happy team Moss happy we pack up, being Pat’s birthday we decide to stay for tea and are treted to a glass of champas for Pats birthday followed to a good steak.  Belly’s full we pack the car up and head off for home.

Today we have a shoot with MPI Offshore, a world leader in Offshore wind turbine installation, operating the worlds largest & most powerful wind turbine vessel MPI Resolution. MPI’s Marketing Manager Paul Bell has given Team Moss a creative brief in order to capture MPI Offshore at its finest, boats n all.

Up and about really early this morning @5:45 time to set off for a full days shoot with MPI, brrrgh its could, frosty and feels like the middle of the night. Anti sickness tablets taken, no time for bacon & sausage butties sadly.

 15 minute drive to the Harbour of Well Next The Sea where we met up with Leslie Roberts from MPI who joined us for the days shoot. Team Moss had been rocking about on the boat three hours, poor Pat didn’t have her sea legs today and had to be transported on to another ship to recover from sea sickness bless her. The seas are choppy but nothing Keith the salty sea dog can’t handle…..

Time to get cracking with shooting the MPI Work Boat fleet, Wind turbines, Wind Farms, and bombing about on the boat with the crew and capturing MPI crew hard at work. Team Moss have got some cracking images today despite feeling a little green at times.

2:30 time to pick Pat up hope she’s feeling better, bet she cant wait to get back to dry land. On the journey back to the harbour the sand banks are incredibly close its amazing how beautiful the wooden beach huts look…. note to self must come back in the summer and soak up the atmosphere……

What a day, commercial shoot for MPI complete all there is to do now is to get the images to Paul Bell MPI Marketing Manager to see what he thinks……..

Keith & Team Moss have an early start at Coast & Country head office in Dormanstown Redcar, no time for bacon & sausage butties today. They meet up with Peter Jones from Better Brand Agency who explained what he expected from Team Moss for his creative brief.

The aim of the day was to change the culture at Coast & Country where there is a need for a high quality ad campaign to ensure the team get on board and support the new method of using the telephone number “7272″ to contact the Coast & Country service desk, who will then direct the call to one of the three Coast & Country services. The underlying idea is to transform the service desk team into superheroes, who can literally solve any problems with their superhero qualities.

“WHO YA GUNNA CALL …. 72 72″ this is the new telephone number the team at Coast & Country must use to call the service desk for help & support from the  following three areas……

System Support Team(service desk)

System Development Team (IT Development)

Performance Team (Performance & Planning)

The idea is derived from the “118 118″ Directory Inquiries phone line and making it their own.

Peter Jones form Better Brand Agency gave Keith and Team Moss a tour of the rooms & corridors that would be used for the shoot. The response from the Coast & Country staff was excellent, they really got into their roles of Superheroes for the day and help launch the new “7272″ service desk help line.

Boss > Paul Wood aka Super Man lead his team along the corridor in an action packed shot, Keith achieved this using timed exposure to create blur and movement, tricky but well worth the result. Keith used this same method to capture a lady hard at work sifting through paperwork at a pace. He then captured Harry Potter hard at work in the computer service room, if only we all had a Potter wand just think what we could achieve!

Next on the agenda, individual corporate portraits of the “7272″ team dressed in “Geek Chic” the outfits worn capture the individual Superhero qualities. The final step, all the images were delivered to Peter at Better Brand Agency to work his Photoshop wizardry on the finished images….A massive thanks to the “7272″ team at Coast & Country HQ, we took some brilliant images, a top day had by all. Another success by Keith and Team Moss……

Monday

Monday morning up with the larks preparing for the first day of our UK Roadshow with Visualsoft. Location, the Riverside Stadium Middlesbrough. We arrived early, 10.30am, and it was a good job we did because we had to carry the whole studio up two flights of stairs which took a good 30 minutes. After we caught our breath it was time to set up and prepare.  

12:30 David from Visualsoft informed us that we were on first. After a few sips of orange lucozade we were on. 45 minutes later our presentation is over so we watch all the guy’s from Visualsoft do their bit and I have to say it was fascinating understanding just what goes into their websites.

4.30 It’s time for all who presented to get together at the front and answer any questions posted on the post it notes and the forum kicks off.  

5.30 It ends and now we pack up and after negotiating the two staircases we load up and head for home. A successful day for all concerned.

Once home and after getting all the equipment ready for our early start tomorrow it’s time for something to eat and a glass of red and feet up.  

Tuesday

Tuesday morning up with the larks again, car loaded and off we go to Newcastle for the first of two days shooting for The Co-operative Clothing 2012 catalogue.  Driving to Newcastle at 7 am for a 9.00am start should be a breeze after all it’s only 1 hour away…. 15 minutes late we arrive stressed having had the journey from hell.

After a much needed coffee we go through the plans for the day, make up and hair gets underway and about an hour later we start shooting outside on the quay side in Newcastle. The weather for the time of year is unbelievable, it’s so hot and it really adds to the look of the shots.  

Working hard, Team Moss, the models and Team Co-op work through lunch making hay whilst the weather lasts. We get through a huge amount of clothes more than all of us thought possible. The client is really happy with how the day has gone so the day ends on a high, fantastic images bagged, we pack up and head for home arriving back at about 7.30.  

Preparation starts for day two for the Co-op, batteries charged equipment sorted, it’s now 9pm so food and then bed.

Wednesday

Wednesday car loaded and off by 7am again, Team Moss head for Newcastle this time in a convoy as we have to head straight down to London after the shoot, so Natalie our make up artist is following us and Claire our stylist is bringing up the rear.  We arrive again 9.15 yet another stressful journey.

It’s even hotter today, summer at last, it’s the end of September and over 80 degrees and the models have to put up with thick shirts and tank tops.  Again we all work like devils and the images come thick and fast.   Team Co-op are over the moon with the results.

It’s Claire’s last day today so as we have finished a bit early we all retreat to a bar we had used for the last shot and toasted to Claire’s future and wished her well. Pat and me now have to dash off as we have to be in London tomorrow so we are going to stay in Grantham over night to break the journey.
Four and a half hours later we arrive, it’s 9 pm, we check in, unload the car which is full to the brim with our studio kit and then head off to the service station diner for food. We are not impressed at all with the choice of food for the weary traveler, there’s only sausage chips and beans or fish chips and beans left! We reluctantly eat as we are both hungry , walk across the car park and go to bed.     

 Thursday

Yet another early start as we head off to London for day two of our UK Roadshow with Visualsoft. Today it’s at the Paypal Offices in Richmond.  Why is it that no matter where you drive it’s always a battle? We arrive 20 minutes late after a gruelling three and a half hour journey which according to Mrs sat nav should only have taken two! Anyway the offices are right on the river and the sun is shining, it’s a beautiful location.

I set up the studio in a rush as once we have unloaded it’s a nightmare for Pat to park but she does it with 15 minutes to spare and so helps me to get ready for our presentation. It goes really well with lots of questions and audience participation. We stay and are involved in the forum and answering question from the post it notes, we finish about 6.30 once we have packed away.

Pat then leaves to retrieve the car taking with her a lovely lady called Amy from PayPal who helped her to get the car back to the offices as it was a one way system and Pat would never have found her way back, so many many thanks to Amy. We then get packed up and on our way to Bedford for another overnight stay ready for our shoot at Bedford School tomorrow.
As we leave Richmond we pass Richmond Park which looks so lovely and peaceful in the early evening sun. So we decide to stay and have a bit of a picnic. There’s a cooling breeze which is very welcome after a hot day. Tea over we set off, the traffic is just as bad as it was in the morning and the journey takes us just as long. We finally arrive in our hotel at 9.30 in Bedford and after unloading and sorting through the days emails we go to bed.

Friday

We arrive at Bedford School at 7.55am just in time for a welcome breakfast  with the deputy head.  The dining hall is like a 4 star restaurant and the food and choice is certainly nothing what we had when we were at school.  The school and grounds are beautiful and the pupils are a pleasure to talk to and work with, so well behaved and well manned.  A bit different to my school but so refreshing.

The shoot gets underway. We have been commissioned by Agency Inc who are based in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, funnily enough not far from the PayPal offices where we were yesterday, anyway our task is to follow a film crew from Mike Berry Films and to take stills after they have filmed. Image one is of a pupil playing golf with an artist brush instead of a golf club spraying a canvas with paint as he tees off.  Image two is of the cricket team with the batsman playing a forward defensive stroke using a Cello instead of a bat.  Image three is the rowing team sat in a row as if in a boat with their oars on their school desks, and finally the last image of the day is with the school rugby team, the kicker, posed Jonny Wilkinson style, is ready to take a penalty but holding an old book to his face. The message in all of the shots is that the school, although being academic, offers much, much more.

The heat is stifling as we are 5 days into the indian summer. We shade were we can, drinks are a plenty.  Who would have thought that three full days of outdoor shooting at the end of September would be so good and hot… with no rain!
Well it’s 4 o’clock and the job is done so after saying our goodbyes we pack up and head for home. After yet more traffic jams and delays we arrive home at 9pm.  What a week, tired and hungry we get something to eat and have a well earned glass or two of red.

Feet up for the weekend ready to start again on Monday…

Fashion Photography Shoot for The Co-operative Clothing Company

Keith and the team were hired once again by The Co-operative Clothing Company to shoot the new 2012 fashion corporate workwear clothing catalogue.  The team were responsible for location hunting, sourcing models, and helping with the 2012 catalogue brief.  The last two days were spent in September on location in sunny Newcastle.
