The Leica M Monochrom doesn’t separate the light into colours, offering ‘true’ black-and-white images.

Leica has introduced what it claims to be the world’s first digital camera fitted with a full-frame black-and-white sensor. Olivier Laurent reports from Leica’s launch event in Berlin.

The new Leica M Monochrom uses a newly-designed 18-megapixel CCD sensor, which has been stripped of the conventional Bayer Pattern filter. “This means that the sensor never separates the light into colours, and subsequently there is no need for complicated colour algorithms,” says Leica.

As the camera does not “see” colours, says Leica, “every pixel records true luminance values to deliver ‘true’ black-and-white images that are significantly sharper than comparable exposures from a camera with a colour-sensitive sensor.”

The camera has a sensitivity range of ISO 320 to ISO 10,000, and features a new raw data histogram display that offers “original, unprocessed and unmodified raw data allowing for precise correction or optimisation of exposures.”

Encased in a body similar to Leica’s M9-P, the M Monochrom has been designed for discreet handling – it features a matt black chrome top plate with just the name of the product engraved on the accessory shoe – and can use most of Leica M lenses built from 1954 onwards.

“Black and white photography has become more popular than ever before, with photographers continuing to be fascinated by it as an expressive medium,” says Jesko von Oeynhausen, product manager for the M-System at Leica. “This is confirmed by the numerous monochrome images presented to us by members of the Leica M community, with whom we are in constant contact. With the Leica M Monochrom, we are offering photographers the opportunity to explore black and white photography with a product that is unique in the digital world, producing consistent and authentic results. The camera’s exclusively black and white sensor brings an enormous technical benefit that is reflected in the outstanding image quality it delivers.”

While Leica says that it’s the world’s first full-frame digital black-and-white camera, both Kodak and Phase One previously released black-and-white only models in the early 2000s.

The Leica M Monochrom will be available from July at a retail price of £6120.

Leica has also announced the release of a new APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH lens, which has been designed to “fully exploit the opportunities offered by high-resolution camera systems.”

The lens is said to have “achieved the best test results ever seen in the Leica M-Lens programme,” says Leica. “This means that all images captured in any situation show extreme sharpness and resolution of details from corner to corner.”

The lens incorporates a floating element, which changes position in relation to the front group during focusing to achieve greater image quality throughout the lens’ focusing range. In total, the lens uses eight elements in five groups.

The Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH will be retail at £5400 from July.

As the superstar Marilyn Monroe once said herself, “We are all of us stars, and we deserve to sparkle”. The inspiration behind my final year collection, was to create a range of dresses that make would make women feel a million dollars. Not just on the outside, but on the inside too. Each of my dresses has the unique concept of built in body support, to provide the wearer with comfort and confidence. I wanted the designs to be classic and timeless, and something they could wear again and again in years to come. I looked into greek drapery which is really elegant, and created the designs using moulage.

I love how back in era of golden hollywood, women embraced their femininity, their bodies, and just emulated beauty and confidence, and this something i wanted to recreate in my images. I wanted my model to look like a movie star and feel like one too. During my research i came across the website of La Rosa campsite, and absolutely loved their vintage caravans. They reminded me of the old trailers that the movie stars would use to get ready in back in the day. It was then that i decided to use the site for my photoshoot, and had the idea that the site could look like a quirky, vintage movie set of which my model would play the main part. The images came out exactly how i imagined, if not better! I was over the moon with the results.

Here’s how the day went….

As i set off to pick up Trudy (my model) from the train station, my heart sank as i realised the weather wasn’t what i hoped it would be. Cold, wet, windy, and miserable. There wasn’t one, little ray of sunshine through the thick, grey, cloud, and i had no hope of it improving from what the weather report told me this morning. “This is just what i need” i thought.  After previously having what i could only describe as a week from hell, i couldn’t help but feel like i was loosing the will. Imagining what i thought would be a beautiful, crisp, sunny, spring day – today couldn’t have started any differently!

We arrived at the studio to find Lisa (our make-up artist) and Keith, looking  as worried as i did. “It will be fine!” i said, (more trying to convince myself than the others!!).. “i hope you’ve brought your wellies” Keith laughed. We are heading to a rural campsite in the heart of the Whitby Goathland, to a place quite nicely named “La Rosa”. Unbeknown to me – it really was ‘out in the sticks’ as they put it , and i really could have done with my wellies. Pat and Lisa rocked up with their Hunters on looking the part, whilst i decided to wear my favourite pair of black, suede ankle boots. Not the best decision i made that day..
I briefed Lisa on the look i wanted for the shoot, and she began to work her magic. The theme was old Hollywood glamour, and ever the expert she crafted the look perfectly.

As we set off in the car, the sky began to brighten and i breathed a sigh of relief as the clouds broke and the sun shone down. “Thank God for that.. at least the suns on my side today!” i said, as i turned to Trudy who was just as chuffed. As i followed the Patmobile through the open country roads, myself and Trudy couldn’t help but laugh as i struggled to climb up the steep hills, loosing sight of Keith and Pats car on numerous occasions as they ploughed ahead without a problem. After half an hour on long, winding roads, we finally reached the dirt track leading to La Rosa Campsite. We where in the middle of nowhere and where on a downhill road for at least 15 minutes. It was covered in rocks and puddles, and was so bumpy that Trudy’s rollers where falling from her head in all different directions! we couldn’t help but laugh at our situation.

We settled into the shoot instantly, and Trudy was fantastic. We began with the old caravans, shooting inside and out, and created some beautiful images. Keith even used his vintage Rollieflex camera with film. Only an expert such as Keith could create such amazing images using such a unique camera. I was amazed! Although the sun shone all day, it was still pretty chilly and poor Trudy handled the situation with such professionalism, and she managed to keep a smile on her face. All in all, i was beyond happy with the work of the team and the images Trudy and Keith managed to create.

After a long day of hard work and concentration, the full team tucked into a well deserved fish and chips at the lovely Cross Butts Restaurant just outside of Whitby, and Keith even enjoyed a nice glass of red wine – which was more than well deserved if you ask me!!

We were contacted by Gary to provide some inspiring lifestyle images for his new business website. He needed imagery which would convey the essence of his brand message to his target audience…. he needed to show his approachability, professionalism and expertise within the health and fitness industry.

Gary has a fully equipped studio just off the M1 nr Wakefield, so this is where we began on day one, after the obligatory bacon and sausage sandwich of course!!

The objective was to show Gary coaching his clients and capture his supportive friendly nature, this Gary felt, is so important as so many people feel intimidated by being in a gym especially if they have not done it before. This was achieved quite quickly as the people Gary had chosen to work with soon got into the swing of things.

So by the end of the day there was a really good collection of images for Gary to choose from..
Day two and it’s off to an office in Leeds, which was kindly supplied by The Individual Agency, to capture some corporate style shots. Then it’s back to the studio for some creative shots of the equipment…

After being on Radio Leeds to promote a Fashion Photography workshop for Teesside University Keith was asked to return to do the One on One Interview with Liz Green.
Liz Green has in-depth interviews with the great and good of Yorkshire and as Keith originates from Morley in Yorkshire the show was interested to meet him..
Liz covered lots of subjects about Keith’s life, his upbringing, childhood memories good and bad, how he got into photography, why he loves black and white for his fine art and where his inspiration comes from.. He also got to choose 10 tracks of his favorite music.

So we set off on a bright sunny day down to the radio station in Leeds, arriving with about 30mins to spare. We meet Kimberley Metcalfe, the shows producer, she takes us upstairs, makes us a brew and settles us in… Then 2pm and Keith is taken into the studio and the red light pops up “Live on Air” and away he goes..

Liz introduces Keith and starts by asking what memories his first song choice triggers, it’s Louis Armstrong “It’s a Wonderful World” and so the show goes on. Liz asks some really interesting probing questions which Keith is more than happy to answer, and in no time at all the hour is up and it’s time to say goodbye..

It was great to meet Liz and Kimberley, they made us feel really welcome and comfortable. The only thing left to do now was have a wonder around Leeds city centre as we don’t get down there very often and finish off the day with a treat, a lovely meal at Harvey Nics.

First outfit on, Natalie was in her element and so was Pat for that matter of fact, ” Oouuuu they’re nice!! ” ….  shoes shoes shoes, is all I heard, I have to say they were fantastic tho.

It didn’t take Natalie long to get into her stride, team moss functioning at their optimum, it wasn’t long before we were eating through the stock and required images.

40 minutes to go before lunch Pat breaks away and loads up her Party Susie, she is becoming widely known for her lunches lol…. Lunch over we crack on with capturing the rest of the images changing backgrounds and lighting as we go.

The time passes so quickly and before I have time to think its over and time to pack up. Tom and Faye from Spylovebuy.com are really happy with the images and so are team moss, we have all had a fantastic day and the clients go home with loads of fantastic images. Job done.It’s now time for food and yes you’re right… a cheeky bottle of red to celebrate a good day.

Less than a month after announcing that it would seek bankruptcy protection in the US, Kodak has announced that it will stop the production of digital cameras and picture frames, as well as pocket-size video cameras.

“For some time, Kodak’s strategy has been to improve margins in the capture device business by narrowing our participation in terms of product portfolio, geographies and retail outlets. Today’s announcement is the logical extension of that process, given our analysis of the industry trends,” says Pradeep Jotwani, Kodak’s chief marketing officer.

However, the firm has moved to reassure film photographers. “Kodak’s continuing consumer products and services will include the traditional film capture and photographic paper business, which continues to provide high-quality and innovative products and solutions to consumers, photographers, retailers, photofinishers and professional labs,” it says in a statement.

The news comes as Kodak is undergoing a wide-ranging strategic review of its businesses with the “commitment to drive sustainable profitability through its most valuable business lines.” But Kodak is quick to point out that the move won’t mean the end for Kodak-branded digital cameras. Instead, the firm plans to license its brand to third-party manufacturer – a move that mirrors Polaroid’s action in the years leading to and following its own bankruptcy.

Kodak says that it has contacted its retail partners, and is working closely with them to ensure an orderly transition. “Kodak will continue to honor all related product warranties, and provide technical support and service for its cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames.”

Kodak also plans to focus its resources on retail-based photo kiosks and digital dry lab systems, consumer inkjet printers and the Kodak Gallery.

Two weeks ago, BJP’s technical writer Jonathan Eastland argued that Kodak needed to refocus its business around its film division. “What make them think that digital printing will push their share price up? For Kodak to make digital printers their core business is laughable,” he said. “Each time Kodak has discontinued a film, they used the excuse that it represented less than a certain percentage of their turnover, but it’s still a percentage of a very large niche market. There are still millions of photographers around the world that are using film, and not hundreds as Kodak seems to suggest. Kodak’s got to go back and crunch their numbers about the film market. All people want are these little yellow boxes of film, and that should be their core business, even it means reducing the company’s size further.”

“We are looking for fashion, fine art models.”

We need some new faces as we have work later this year where we will be needing good models, also I am wanting to create some new fine art images to exhibit later this year.

Day one of the first test shoots arrives and we find ourselves working with Karolina and Katie, it’s always exciting working with new people as you never know what to expect from them.  Both  Karolina and Katie brought clothes they felt comfortable in and Team Moss got to work deciding what style to run with.

It took me all of 30 seconds to decide I was going to shoot in black and white, the rest of the team got to work on the theme which was Old  Hollywood. Makeup had to be very specific especially for black and white, as the last thing I wanted to do was to retouch anything.   A few hours later this is the results.

I am really happy with the results and am sure we will be working with Karolina and Katie again.
